Whether it’s traditions of dinners that feel forced and awkward or that holiday party where our bosses try to act like our equals…it’s that time of year again! Only this holiday season don’t waste time or money drinking “spritzes” and “fizzes”. I mean, are you a sorority girl looking to “just dance”? Of course not! However, you’re not the Grinch either and if you don’t join in on the reindeer games with your boozy holiday drinks you’ll be the humbug of the party. So here are some holiday spirits we found around the web that’ll keep you somewhat respectable while showing others you like to have a little fun when it comes to imbibing. Oh, and remember, we have a great Fatherhood Survival Tool that will go great with every one of these suggestions.
ADULT HOT CHOCOLATE
No, this isn’t what it sounds like. However, it will be hot, wet, and pleasurable so take it for what it’s worth
1 cup milk
1 serving of hot chocolate mix
1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 oz Kahlua (Coffee Liqueur)
1 oz Amaretto (Almond Liqueur)
1 tsp cinnamon OR 1 tsp. chili pepper (for a little kick!)
chocolate syrup (like Hershey’s), drizzled
-Heat mug with milk in the microwave to desired temperature
-Stir in hot chocolate mix. (make sure the temperature is per your liking – now is the time to reheat if needed!)
-Pour in Baileys, Kahlua, and Amaretto and stir to incorporate.
-Serve with the choice of your toppings and drink hot!
APPLE PIE SANGRIA
If you’re like me, just the word “sangria” brings happy thoughts and past memories of my pre-child days, so why not give yourself something to actually look forward to this Thanksgiving? Well, besides your in-laws going home and football on the television.
2 bottles (standard size) white table wine, riesling, or moscato (we used table wine because its inexpensive and I like the sweetness with the cider. if you want to make it less sweet, use something like a pinot grigio of sauvignon blanc…or do one bottle of sweet and one bottle of dry for somewhere in between)
5 cups fresh apple cider
2 cup club soda
1 cup caramel vodka
4 honey crisp apples, chopped
3 pears, chopped
2 cinnamon sticks
-Cut the fruit and place in the bottom of your pitcher or jug
-Combine all of the ingredients except the cinnamon sticks
-Stir, stir, stir
-Let sit overnight (or at least a couple hours)
-About 4 hours before serving, throw in the cinnamon sticks
-Stir, stir, stir
-Serve over ice
**note: you could also save the club soda until right before serving. this would make the drink a bit crisper
BOURBON PUMPKIN SMASH
Ok bourbon lovers, I already know there’s only a few things that you’re supposed to mix in with this liquor of choice, however, for those of us that love ice cream, pumpkin, and drinks that kick in faster than expected…have fun!
1 1/2 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Unsweetened pumpkin puree
2 oz. Vanilla ice cream
2 oz. Milk
2 Teaspoons maple syrup
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Add the bourbon, pumpkin puree, ice cream, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, shake well to break up the pumpkin and ice cream and pour into a cocktail glass.
BAILEY’S & KISSES CANDY CANE MARTINI
I’m always hesitant to discuss any martini that isn’t “vodka, shaken, not stirred” but because I’m in the Festivus mood, and it includes Bailey’s, I’ll let this one slip by.
2 ounces Baileys Irish Cream
2 ounces very cold vodka
3 white chocolate/candy cane Hershey’s kisses, melted
1 candy cane, to stir with
-In a small bowl, melt hershey’s kisses and completely mix. There may be little red dots that don’t dissolve – that’s ok (they just sink to the bottom).
-In a cold shaker, add vodka fresh from the freezer and Bailey’s. Then add melted chocolate.
-Pour into martini glass and give a good couple stirs with candy cane.
-The candy cane will slowly dissolve into the drink and add a delicious, peppermint flavor!
RUM WITH EGGNOG
This one’s an oldie but a goodie and it’s kinda like high school on homecoming night in that it’s easy and quick. The recipe says you can use whiskey but if you want to be traditional go with rum.
2 oz rum OR whiskey
Your favorite store-bought eggnog
-Mix it up in your favorite cup and sprinkle with grated nutmeg.
